Checa surges to the front in FP1
Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) made a late surge in the first free practice session to go quickest with a time of 1 minute 29.978 seconds, the Spaniard the only man to dip under the 1m30 mark. The double Phillip Island winner was one-tenth quicker than Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team), who looked to be entirely at ease on the R1 bike that won the last two WSB races held at Donington.
Third place went to Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda), who was three-tenths quicker than Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad) and a surprising Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team). Three Italians - Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare), Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) and Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) - took the next three places, as 7 different manufacturers locked in the top 7 places.
